So it took a lot of effort (including 4 1/2hours drive to and from this particular breeder), but we shook hands on a dog They will be born in may and we will confirmation from an ultrasonic tomorrow if it works.
But I wont leave you hanging, the breeder currently has a litter of 6-week old Labradors and mokke got your back

Showline. We like the appearance more and they are usually more calm and gentle. If everything goes according to plan I can even bring her to work

In Germany golden retrievers are separated in 2 lines, show and workline. While the showline is bigger, broader and has thicker fur, they are also more calm and require less work and stimulation. The work-line is smaller and more nimble, with more hunting instinct. While still gentle compared to other races, they are far more active than the Showline

They're bred with a different purpose in mind. Workline is supposedly sportier, smaller, faster, more nimble and active, and it is bred to have stronger work instincts for hunting and sports (retrievers get shot ducks out of the water, for instance), while the showline is bred to be a bit more "comfy" and bigger and it is a bit lower maintenance in the physical excercise department and has a more family friendly personality. AFAIK the difference in personality is not all that significant, though.

@metti: Additionally to what mokke said, you can choose between a pure family pet with more incentive on appearance and friendliness and a working, more trainable, but also more demanding companion.
As far as retrievers go the work line was the traditional Goldie used for hunting water birds like ducks and goose.

Even the workline is extremely family friendly, though. I personally prefer the smaller build and would go for workline based on that alone tbh

Ofc it differs from dog to dog. I mean with decent socialization a Goldie never becomes a ball biting monster.
Breeders just try to get the mentioned aspects across to the pups by choosing the parents according to wanted traits. It's a lottery with maximized chances.

AFAIK the difference in personality is not all that significant, though.

The biggest characterdifference comes with the emphasis the breeder is using. If you go for the working line, chances are good that the breeder will use more active, work willing dogs to breed, while Showlinebreeders will use gentler dogs additional to their appearance. But you can get work-line appearance with gentle character and the other way around. Anything goes really.
This is just the general direction. 70% is down to training and the family.
That being said, it is nearly impossible to train them to be good guarding dogs or make them generally aggressive. That was nearly eliminated by breeding them to be gentle fluffballs filled with love

Why are half the doggos darker and why are the adult doggos much lighter?

Is it simply the case that one of the parents is darker and the other lighter? And do the doggos lighten up as they grow? Or are these some dark haired doges?

Those are labradors, not goldens, as explained in the post

Colors may vary a lot even in the same litter. Some Goldies are close to white while others are much darker into yellow-golden-brownish regions. That might change even seasonally depending on coat length, density, etc. Lighting is a factor too. And yeah, those brown Labs won't become Goldies any time soon
